Located in the near South Side neighborhood of Douglas, near Dunbar Park, the Avenue Theatre opened in 1913. It was located on Indiana Avenue, off 31st Street. The Avenue Theatre seated 1,500 and featured vaudeville in its earliest years, before switching over to movies.
In 1940, the Avenue Theatre was renamed the Terrace Theatre, and was in operation through 1950 when it closed. It operated as an African American movie theatre. It has since been torn down.
