Located in the city centre at the corner of Albert Street and Elizabeth Street. The Forum Theatre was opened on 16th November 1967 with Paul Scofield in “A Man for All Seasons”. It was built for and operated by Greater Union Theatres. It was designed in an Italian Renaissance style, and had seating for 992 provided in orchestra and balcony levels. It was equipped with both 70mm & 35mm projectors. It operated as a luxury, first-run cinema.
The Forum Theatre was twinned in the 1980’s and eventually became Greater Union 4 & 5 (Greater Union 1-3 were located in the former single screen Metro Theatre which became the Albert Cinemas when it was tripled). The Greater Union 4 & 5 (together with the Greater Union 1-3 were closed by Greater Union Theatres in April 2001 and were demolished. A commercial and retail building now sits on the site.

This was one of the best of the “modern” cinemas in Brisbane. A large screen, stalls and dress circle and many 70mm released. It never recovered from being twinned. That was vandalism.
I can remember seeing the Russian production of “War and Peace” at this theatre. If I’m not mistaken the entire film had to be screened over 2 nights? That would have been in the late 60’s before it was twinned .
