Located in the Elswick district to the west of the city centre. The Crown Electric Theatre was built in 1910 on the site of the Elswick Picture Palace. It opened on 24th December 1910 and presented first-class variety and pictures. Seating was provided for 1,041, with 465 in the stalls, 387 in the pit and 189 in the circle. It had a 26ft wide proscenium. It went over to full-time cinema use in 1914. Around 1930 it was equipped with a British Thomson Houston(BTH) sound system.
The Crown Electric Theatre was taken over by the Essoldo chain in February 1945, and was closed on 24th November 1962. It was converted into a bingo club and this was closed when the building was damaged by fire in 1971 and the remains were demolished later that year.
