The Sands Drive-In theatre is not shown in the 1964 International Motion Picture Almanac, but it does appear in the 1969 version with parking for 300 cars.
A closer address is HWY 95 and Road B, Elkhart, OK. The drive-in can be seen just to the west of the intersection on the south side of Road B. Today, it appears to be private property, but the ramps are clearly present. http://tinyurl.com/zk26ge7
The location of the drive-in is Elkhart, Oklahoma, not Kansas. Google maps it as Elkhart, Oklahoma which means that it crosses the border much like Kansas City does.
Got the photo loaded – mods please correct the state (did Elkhart extend into OK in 1958 or is that more recent?). Same guy managed the Doric in midtown.
I cannot speak to whether Elkhart extended into Oklahoma in 1958, but at least according to Google it does now. There is also no other nearby town in Oklahoma where the drive-ins could be associated.
For mapping purposes, the correct address should be Elkhart, Oklahoma.
With a name like that, it sounds like it should be in Las Vegas, Nevada!
The 1964 IMPA lists the drive in, but not in Oklahoma. It lists it in Elkhart Kansas The drive in was located wholly within the State of Oklahoma. .
There is no Elkhart Oklahoma. . It has been listed as EVA, Ok in other publications.
On a topographical map ( https://www.gaiagps.com/map/?layer=CalTopo&lat=36.9836&lon=-101.9019&zoom=16 ) ( of the area, there are 2 Drive Ins. Which one is this one?
For both, it appears the original projection buildings are still present.
Boxoffice, Dec. 21, 1957: “ELKHART, KAS. - The Doric Theatre, completely rebuilt since it was damaged by fire more that a year ago, was reopened recently … The building is owned by C. S. McClung. A contract was signed recently by Dr. K. W. Pieratt of Dumas, Tex., and J. B. Mann of Guymon, Okla., with McClung for a long term lease on the theatre building and fixtures. Delbert Stewart, who manages the Sands Drive-In south of here on Highway 95 for Pieratt and Mann, is manager of the Doric as well.”
A closer address is 71903 OK-95, Goodwell, OK.
Google Maps has updated their addresses and this puts it right on the property. However, Goodwell is a considerable distance away and may not make much sense. But that is how Google Maps has it.
Today, you can still see the faint hint of ramps.
