Three different approaches to market the Empress. 1) One of its first ads in 1914 with “The Perils of Pauline” by Henry Putz, operator of the Empress. 2) An ad placed in the retail listings of the paper instead of the movie ad page that spoofs a long-running retailer’s ad that adjoined it. 3) At right, a nickel Charlie Chaplin film in 1923 at the Empress will do such good business that neighboring business get an apology in advance.
