South Australia’s first country drive-in opened as the Shandon Drive-In in September 1957, in Port Pirie (today renamed Risdon Park). In 1965 it was re-named Flinders Drive-In. Finally being renamed Port Pirie Drive-In, it was closed on 26th March 1984 with Jacqueline Bisset in “Class” & Michael McKean in “Young Doctors in Love”. It was sold in August 1984 and housing has been built on the site.
Projectionist John Richmond worked at the theatre from its opening to closing. On opening night, as was usual in those day the performance would end with a short piece of film of Queen Elizabeth II with the soundtrack of the National Anthem “God Save the Queen”. That very same short piece of film was still in use on closing night.

Closed 26/3/1984. Also called Flinders Drive-in. There is a video of the last night of operation on the S.A. drive-ins & cinemas Facebook page. Tne drive-in has been demolished. What is there now(if anything?) is unknown?
This drive-in had its own newspaper called the Shandon News.

The site might now be housing?
Possibly located in the southern end of Port Pirie?
