Roxy Drive-In

Top: Japanese Kawanishi H8K1 Type 2 Flying Boat (Emily) used in the bombing raids. Below: This notice published on Monday 10th August 1942 obviously came as a result of discussions between the authorities and purveyors of amusement. The earlier finishing time of 10.30 p.m., which was specified for their shows, suggests that it was thought advisable to have patrons home before the possible occurrence of midnight attacks. In fact, Townsville was spared any further bombardment. Not so lucky was Darwin which endured more than 100 raids (many very serious) over two years, until 12th November 1943. After only a brief period of closure the Olympia Open-Air was allowed to resume screening with the new early starting time arrangement on 10th August 1942, but the Roxy’s Sports Ground Drive-In - for reasons unknown - never re-activated.
