Roxy Drive-In

WWII blackout conditions were in force all around Australia – particularly after Japan entered the conflict in December 1941. Darwin experienced its first, and a very severe, air attack on 19th February 1942. Townsville was another major northern city likely to be in the cross hairs. After three nights of bomb drops (which fortunately resulted in no casualties) it was decided by the Townsville authorities on 31st July that the light of outside screenings posed too much of a target risk. On Saturday 1st August 1942 these advertisements for the Drive-In and Olympia Open-Air advised a cessation of screenings: ‘Special Announcement. The Management of the Drive-In Theatre regret to announce that owing to an order from the Government there will be No Screening Tonight and no screenings until further notice. It is hoped to resume screenings at a later date …’
