The town of Kulja grew up around the railway and in the 1930’s the community purchased the Kirup Hall and relocated it to Kulja. Movies were screened there from the 1930’s by Paddy Baker to 1971 when the town died and the Government sold off the houses built for the railway workers. The hall was badly damaged in 1979 by cyclone Hazel. Perhaps it was not rebuilt, as there is now no hall there - just the wheat bin.
