Located in Takapuna to the north of Auckland. The Tudor Theatre on the Shore was closed 29th November 1998 and was demolished (it has its own page on Cinema Treasures).
The replacement Berkeley Cinema opened on the site of the previous cinema in 2001 with 4-screens, two of which had 137-seats and two with 67-seats (total capacity 407-seats). Berkeley Cinemas was the first circuit in Auckland to introduce ‘high end’ seating called the Circle Lounge at the rear of the auditoriums, together with restaurant and bar facilities. In 2010 the Berkeley Cinemas circuit was acquired by Hoyts Cinemas, and this cinema was renamed Hoyts Berkeley. It was about this time that digital projection was introduced.
In 2019 the cinema was acquired by Kelly Rogers & David Ross, who operated the Rialto film exhibition and distribution company, and presented the Rialto channel on Sky. They installed the very comfortable lounge seating and renamed the cinema the Monterey Cinema.
In December 2022 the cinema was acquired by Shaun & Helen Hayward. They invested heavily throughout 2023, including upgraded to the projection and sound systems. Seating capacities are Screen 1:90 Screen 2:25 Screen 3:25 & Screen 4:92. Unusually, the entrance to the Takapuna Beachside Cinemas is at the rear of this large building. The screens are located on the first floor, while there are a number of restaurants on the first floor at the front of the building.
