The Oddfellows Hall was opened in the 1890’s. It became the Central Hall of Varieties in 1899, but was destroyed by fire in January 1900. It was rebuilt and re-opened as the Central Palace of Varieties in October 1901. Around 1909 it was re-named Comedy Theatre of Varieties. It was showing films as part of the programme from 1913 and became a full time cinema known as the Comedy Theatre by 1927. By 1931 it had been equipped with a British Talking Pictures(BTP) sound system.
The Comedy Theatre was closed in June 1958 and was demolished later that year. A furniture store now occupies the building on the site.
