In March of 1911, the Madison Electric Theatre became the second moving picture theatre after the short-lived Royal Theatre opened and closed on Central Avenue a year earlier. The theater had a 14-year run launching March 18, 1911 and having at least a half-dozen different owners. A year after the Madison Electric Theatre opened, it became the Electric Theatre and got competition from the Savoy Theatre.
The Savoy Theatre and Electric Theatre got into a heated battle in 1913 when both booked “The Resurrection” with Blanche Walsh on the same date. To stay competitive, the Electric Theatre closed to make major improvements and relaunched with a grand opening on March 11, 1915 under new ownership. These operators completed a ten-year lease on March 22, 1925. The rival Savoy Theatre ultimately lost the battle changing to the Liberty Theatre, but going out of business in 1924. However, the Electric Theatrefailed just four as Alphonse Cocino, Sr. retrofitted the former Electric Theatre becoming Cocino’s Garage later in 1925.
