Savoy Theatre

Located in St. Austell, Cornwall. The purpose-built St. Austell Picture Theatre opened after the end of World War I. It was operated by H.J. Watkins and Ellis Slack was the manager. It had been renamed The Cinema by 1924. It had a 25ft wide proscenium. It closed at the end of the 1920’s after the supply of silent films dried up.

It was eqipped with a Film Industries Ltd. sound system and reopened as the Savoy Theatre. The Savoy Theatre was still open in 1937 but had closed by 1944.

Later uses for the building were Savoy Motors, Hickling’s TV and Domestic Appliences store and finally Toolserv, a tool hire and sales store. Sadly the former Savoy Theatre was destroyed in an arson attack in the late-1980’s. The site today is occupied by the Savoy Building, which contains a hair academy, a hairdresser, a second-hand store and a Chineese restaurant.
