The Empire Cinema was opened by the Blake Brothers (Theatres) Ltd. on 27th May 1915. Seating was provided for 374 in the stalls and 160 in the circle. It was taken over by the Granada Theatres chain on 25th December 1934.
The Empire Cinema was closed in the Autumn of 1975, but re-opened in April 1976 as Granada 3 (The Granada Cinema in St Peter’s Street had been twinned). The Granada 3 was closed on 19th June 1977 and was demolished in Autumn of 1977. A new building on the site was first occupied by an Eastern Electricity showroom.
