The Neighborhood Theater, in the West Englewood neighborhood, was open from at least 1911, as a June 17, 1911 Motion Picture World article talks about the theater:
“The Neighborhood Theater on Sixty Third Street near Ashland Avenue, is a nice little house showing only pictures. Projection is of a high standard and the picture is very well shown. Mrs. May M. Peach, the owner, plays the pictures, and it is to be expected that the picture on the screen will be of the highest quality when the manager is so near it. Mrs. Peach plays along to the pictures well too. Evidently the house holds the people out a good deal of time, for the entrance is adorned with the bulletins of the licensed manufacturers, and a little framed motto strikes one as being rather neat, ‘Cheer up, the best is yet to come!’, which was quite true as the show is a good one.”
The last listing for the Neighborhood Theater in the Chicago Tribune was in November 1914, and a classified ad in 1919 has the the building as a vacant property for sale. During the 1950’s and into the 1960’s, the building was home to a florist shop. Today a hair salon is at this address.
