Kino Otava

In Horazdovice, in the Plzen region of the western part of Bohemia, in the Czech Republic, a newspaper report dated 13th January 2016 said that Kino Otava would be celebrating its 40th anniversary in May 2016, indicating that it first opened in May 1976.

The report said that the cinema was losing money, and urged the city to “take care of it”. The authorities had announced a poll, so that citizens could comment on its fate, and they were trying to find a way to keep the cinema open, despite dwindling audiences. But a more realistic solution might be for an alternative use of the building, as modernisation was required to the projection and sound (digital upgrade, presumably) that might prove too costly.

In the event, it appears that closure was the only option. I passed through the town in May 2017. My photographs were taken from our tour coach, and I had no time to look closely, but the cinema did appear to have closed. (Checking later, I was unable to find any screenings on internet listing sites.) In addition, the “Otava” signage had been removed from the façade, leaving simply “Kino”.
