Located north of the city centre in the Hilltown district. The Empire Theatre was opened in 1903. It was a repertory theatre but films were screened from December 1903. It was re-named Empire Cinema in 1912. It was partially destroyed by a fire in 1914, but was reconstructed. On 3rd January 1927 it was sold to the George Singleton chain and re-named Empire Theatre once again. On the 8th March 1937 it was taken over by the Oscar Deutsch chain of Odeon Theatres Ltd. with ten other cinemas in George Singleton circuit.
The Empire Theatre closed on 30th October 1957 following another fire in the building. The ruins were demolished in 1962 and the site was sold by Odeon on 17th February 1967 and housing was built on the site.
