Opened on January 18, 1971, as part of the large Dalhousie Arts Centre complex at Dalhousie University, the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium is the largest soft-seat theatre in Atlantic Canada. The facility was built as a multi-purpose concert hall and performing arts theatre, and opened with a fully-equipped projection booth and screen for presenting films. In the 1970’s and early-1980’s, 35mm prints of new and classic films were regularly presented here under the banner of “Dalhousie University Cinema”.
Originally operated as a not-for-profit venue by the university, in 1989 the facility was converted into a for-profit rental facility. It currently hosts dozens of touring shows each year, and also serves as the home of Symphony Nova Scotia.
Occasionally, the Cohn still functions as a cinema: each year in September, it hosts the opening night gala screening of the Atlantic International Film Festival.

I’m too young to know the Cohn as a movie theatre, but it’s a great little concert venue for Halifax. Pretty solid acoustics, and small enough that the still-very-1970’s space doesn’t get too crowded. It’s the city’s only true theatre for concerts, and I hope they eventually build a bigger one for a better variety of acts.
