The Palais de Luxe was designed in a Dutch style by noted live theatre architect W.G.R. Sprague. Interior decorations were by DeJong & Company and featured panelled Oak wood walls, antique brass light fittings and displays of blue & white pottery. The staff wore Dutch style costumes as their uniform. It was opened as a cinema on 10th March 1911.

In February 1913 it changed operators and was re-named Canterbury Cinematograph Theatre. It was closed in early-1915, possibly due to conditions during World War I. It never reopened.

It was converted into retail use as a grocer’s store, and it was destroyed by a German bomb during an air-raid in June 1942.
