The Richwood Opera House and Town Hall was built in 1890. The multipurpose facility included the city’s jail, police department, as well as the town hall and opera house. As motion pictures became more popular, the facility was used more frequently for movies than live events.
The facility received an upgrade in 1934 leading to the creation of the 300-seat Union Theatre showing films. That lasted until September 28, 1958 with the film, “Country Music Festival”. After some sporadic live events, owners Esther and Terry Anderson sold off the chairs within the facility in 1961.
Concepts designed to restore the theatre have surfaced numerous times without success. But the facility did get a historical marker explaining the importance of the building.

His name is Terry, Not Jerry according to the Marysville Journal-Tribune. He operated both Richwood’s Union Theatre and Plain City’s Rialto Theatre beginning in 1949. After closing the Union in 1958, Plain City’s Rialto became a standalone first-run independent operator theater until closing a year later.
