IMAX Waikiki

The Hawaii IMAX Theatre - Waikiki opened in 1991 in Waikiki next to the Waikiki Theatre 1 & 2. Featuring a 15/70 IMAX film projector, this theater showed IMAX-format films, including an essentially permanent engagement of “Hidden Hawaii”.

The theater closed on June 30, 1999, after Consolidated Theatres acquired the theater from Destination Cinema. After a period of renovation, the theater reopened on October 3, 1999. Consolidated attempted to boost attendance by adding IMAX feature films such as “Beauty and the Beast”, “The Lion King”, and “Star Wars: Episode II”, in addition to the normal IMAX-format films. However, “The Matrix Reloaded” became the last film to screen there, as Consolidated Theatres closed the theater on July 6, 2003, citing poor local attendance.

The theater later hosted a show by the Cirque Hawaii performance troupe from December 17, 2005 to December 31, 2008.
