The post-War Roanoke Theatre’s December 1, 1946 grand opening ad with “Renegades” in photos. It first closed in November of 1957 due to lack of business as small town theatres were decimated by television.
A dreamer by the name of Martin Moritz and his wife reopened the venue on October 9, 1957. They closed citing four straight months of financial losses out of five they operated it. It closed after the March 2, 1958 showings of “Pal Joey.” They didn’t show the final advertised shows of “Monkey on My Back” likely because it hit close to home. Hoping to sell or lease the building, a decision was made to rid the building from the tax roster through demolition.
