Hochhaus-Litchspiele

The magnificent 10-storey high Anzeiger-Hochhaus was built in 1927-1928 and was designed in an Expressionist/Gothic style by architect Fritz Hoger. It contained a green domed Planetarium on its roof. In December 1928 it was in use as a 210-seat cinema named the Planetarium-Litchspiele. It was equipped with a Welt 2 Manual theatre organ. The building is one of only a few in the city to survive the 88 allied bombing raids on the city during World War II, but sadly on 25th March 1945, the rooftop Planetarium cinema was destroyed by an allied firebomb.

On 6th December 1949 a 400-seat cinema was opened in the building and it was re-named Hochhaus-Litchspiele. The green domed Planetarium was rebuilt on the roof (the highest cinema in Germany) and in 1982 a third screen was added which has 275 seats.
