Built by owner-operator J.J. Parish, it opened in November of 1953 with a 200 car capacity. The Rio Drive-In featured a unique system of heating and cooling patrons cars from a central unit that pumped the treated air thru underground pipes to flexible hoses that fitted into each vehicle. It was closed in the 1970’s.

Adel also had the 325-car Spardel Drive-In, opened by Stein Theatres in 1954. The name suggests that it was located north of Adel on the road to Sparks, a smaller town nearby.

A 1972 aerial view shows the Rio appearing that it was still operational, but was completely gone by the early-1980s.
