The Ottumwa Courier reported in September 1943 that the Strand Theatre after 32 years of operation would be closing. It was opened in December 1911 by E.L. Peterson and Charles J. Hill and sold to the Strand Amusement Co. in 1926. The reason for the closing was a wave of vandalism that had been sweeping all of Ottumwa’s theatres, which the police were investigating. Jake Cohen, city manager, said it would be impossible at the time to buy new seats and make repairs.
The Courier noted in 1946 that after being closed for three years the 300-seat Strand Theatre would be reopening on June 8, completely remodeled by the Ottumwa Theatre Co. Film Daily Year Book 1947 lists the operator as Paramount Theatres/A.H. Blank with 350 seats.
In October 1948 the Courier reported the Strand Theatre would be remodeled into a retail store.
