Homestead Block

This neighborhood theatre opened in 1917 as the Homestead Theatre and closed as a movie theatre around 1979. The movie theatre, in its final years, was also known as the Last Picture Show.

The theatre is currently known as the Phantasy Theatre, and is a major rock music venue in the Cleveland area.

A guide prepared for the 5th annual Lakewood History Walk (Quick View at Google Documents) says that the Homestead Tehatre was built in 1916. A couple of other sources say it was built in 1917, so maybe it was begun in 1916 and completed in 1917. It’s definitely pre-1920, though.

The history page of the Phantasy Concert Club’s web site has a photo of the theater as the Homestead, sometime in the mid-1950s. There are also some modern photos, including two (rather dark) of the auditorium.

In late February of 1974, the Homestead reopened as the Showboat Cinema West with a screening of LAST TANGO IN PARIS
