The Shoreway Theater opened September 29, 1928 in a newly-built retail section in Point Place, Ohio, the northern tip of Toledo with the Ottawa River two blocks to the East and the Maumee River just to its West. The $150,000 neighborhood theatre launched with the silent film “Baby Mine” and an “Our Gang” comedy.
The theatre proved to be adaptable in its formative years. Within two months of opening, the Toledo Railways & Light Company closed the streetcar line that connected Point Place, the Summit Street area, and what would later be Cullen Park and was the Lake Erie Park & Casino to downtown Toledo. The theatre also converted to sound and had new owners in rapid succession. Flood water caused damage in 1930 causing it to close briefly. And the theatre as well as the rest of Point Place became part of the city of Toledo in 1937 when T-Town annexed the suburb.
The Shoreway Theatre was a neighborhood success operating more than 30 years. The theatre got into a pricing war trying to survive competition from drive-in theatres and television in the 1950’s. Late in the decade, it operated only on weekends. The B&N Circuit closed the theatre on April 10, 1960 after a double feature of “Sheba & the Gladiator” and “House on Haunted Hill”. The theatre was converted to other retail purposes and was quite recognizable though minus its attractor in the 21st Century.
