Weaste Picture Hall

Located in the Weaste district of Salford. Built as a temperance billiards hall, the Temperance Picture Theatre was opened in August 1912. In 1913 it was re-named Weaste Picture Hall. It was equipped with a Western Electric(WE) sound system on 20th September 1929 when Laura La Plante in “Showboat” became the first ‘talkie’ to be screened. In 1937 it was taken over by the J.F. Emery Circuit.

They closed the Weaste Picture Hall on 17th May 1957 with Richard Widmark in “Backlash”. There were proposals to turn it into an indoor market, but nothing happened and the empty building was demolished in 1964 and a petrol station was built on the site.
