Popular theatre-owner G.H. Perry brought movies back to downtown Cloverdale after a fire had destroyed the Novelty Theatre on May 28, 1919. The theatre was launched as the Orpheum Theatre in 1920. In 1925, Perry renamed the theatre as the People’s Theatre after a remodeling. Locals often referred to it as Perry’s Theatre.
The People’s Theatre stayed silent into 1930 until new operators took over. On November 22, 1930, the theatre now known as the Cloverdale Theatre began talking pictures. But the prices proved to be to high and quickly went out of business. On January 9, 1931, new owners reduced the price of tickets under the name of the Rose Theatre, a discount house. That move proved unsuccessful with the Rose Theatre going out of business in 1931.
The town’s next movie theatre in 1933 assumed the name of the Cloverdale Theatre but operated in Druids Hall which failed the same year. It wasn’t until the Peter Pan Theatre / Del Rio Theatre that the town had success in the sound film era.
