Star Theatre

The first location for moving pictures in Newton was the Western Star Theatre which opened in a former grocery store location on April 1, 1907. The theatre’s name was shortened to the Star Theatre soon thereafter.

The Star Theater proved so popular that it moved to a larger location a block away on Main Street in April of 1913. In its place was the new home of J.K. Wallace Furniture. The building has since been demolished and was replaced by a bank building.

The photo of the fire damage shows the second location of the Star and needs to be moved to the Chief listing. The original location of the Star was constructed sometime between 1884 and 1886, and was later extended. I’ve added a Sanborn view.
