Her Majesty's Theatre

The Tivoli Theatre was opened in 1913 with 1,500-seats in orchestra and three balconies. It later became His Majesty’s Theatre, then since 1953, Her Majesty’s Theatre. By 1968 it was operated by Hoyts as a cinema using only 970-seats.

Live theatre use returned in the 1970’s when it was taken over by the City Council. It was closed on 24th March 2018 for a $66 million refurbishment and renovation, which to the surprise of many has seen most of the auditorium demolished and rebuilt as a modern theatre. It re-opened in October 2020, but only with an audience capacity of 20 persons due to Covid-19 pandemic regulations. The new 3-tier auditorium has a total of 1,467-seats.
