Originally known as the Magnet Theatre as part of the Magnet Mercantile, this early Nickelodeon was one of several early show stores in downtown Leavenworth. When the Magnet Theatre and 5 Cent Theatre were purchased by Ed Lampson, he changed their names to the Fern Theatre and Palm Theatre in 1909.
The Fern Theatre advertised as, “For the Classes and Masses”. The sister theatre across the street was the Palm Theatre which was advertised as, “For the Masses and the Classes”. The Fern Theatre featured the Phonoscope for primitive sound features including grand operas. When Mensing Amusement took on the theatres, the Fern Theatre would be discontinued not long thereafter in 1914. It was retrofitted as a drug store.
