The Main Street Theatre was a short-lived early silent-era cinema in downtown Galesburg. Created by W.H. Sullivan, Joe Johnston, and Ben Huff within the former retailer, New York Shops, the theatre was created late in 1912 and launched in early-1913. The theatre’s claim to fame was being filmed as the opening shot of a 1912 film spotlighting the hustle and bustle of downtown Galesburg. That film survived into the 21st Century. On August 23, 1913 it was renamed Kozy Theatre.
Competition from larger theatres, including the long-running Colonnade Theatre and Colonial Theatre two blocks away in 1914/5 appears to have upended the Kozy Theatre which closed May 26, 1917 with Helen Holmes in “The Lost Express” and was converted for other retail purposes.
