Royal Assembly Rooms

Located in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire. The Royal Assembly Rooms, sometimes referred to as the Parthenon, seem to have been the first building in the town to host regular picture shows. President Pictures was screening films as early as 15th July 1909 however the cinema was known as White’s Electric Theatre by October 1910 with films presented by Waller Jeffs. Four years later it was then called the Spa Cinema when run by a Mr Hayes but was later under the charge of a Mr Crowdy. A Mrs Fowler opened the Bath Cinema here in 1925 although that doesn’t seem to have lasted long and it soon reverted back to Royal Assemby Rooms name.

By 1930 it seems to have concentrated on vaudeville shows, music-hall acts and cabaret and was called the Blue Café, with various uses later taking place both sides of the war. The building was damaged by fire in 1968 and subsequently rebuilt retaining the facade. More recently part of the building was an Iceland supermarket.
