Complete with a Mariachi band and a Peyote Tribal leader to bless the land, Maya Cinemas held a ribbon cutting ceremony January 10, 2019. Joining five other locations in California, they began showing movies on January 18, 2019.

Maya Cinemas founder Moctesuma Esparza speaking to Fox 5 News says the reason for opening here was to bring luxury theaters to an underserved community at an affordable price.

The cinema, designed by Steven J. Ruth of Retail Design Collaborative, offers 14 screens, with the MPX being more than 70 feet wide, Dolby Atmos sound, RealD 3D, and D-Box.

Catering to families, cry rooms, now only a memory of the 1950’s and almost forgotten in modern cinemas, will return in three auditoriums. A full service cantina and game arcade is also available.

Mr. Esparza, also known as the movie producer for the film “Selena” and others, has future plans to add shops and restaurants to the $75 million La Flores development.

The best theater I’ve been to in recent years. Sound and projection (even in standards) are top notch. Heavily recommended.

Maya Cinemas officially open, brings new business to North Las Vegas

By: Tom George Posted 8:37 PM, Jan 10, 2019 and last updated 1:37 AM, Jan 11, 2019 NORTH LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — A $75 million cinema center opened its doors Thursday in North Las Vegas, paving the way for future development in the NLV downtown area.

Maya Cinemas are located on North Las Vegas Boulevard, between Lake Mead Boulevard and Carey Avenue, and includes 14 screens, an arcade, cantina, and event space. It also boasts some of the largest displays in Nevada, with one larger than IMAX and other theaters featuring chairs that move along with a movie.

“It’s a dream come true for me,” says Maya Cinemas CEO Moctezuma Esparza.

He also said he specifically chose the site, which was once a dirt lot, because he wanted to benefit the underserved community in North Las Vegas, as many residents had to drive at least 20 minutes to go the movies.

But the cinema is all part of a larger goal to spur development in downtown North Las Vegas.

Councilman Isaac Barron says he’s glad to see a family-friendly space where the community can gather.

“Economic development is the best tool for combatting crime and poverty,” Barron said.

In addition to showing everything mainstream theaters have, they also plan to showcase documentaries, international, and foreign language films.
