Earl’s Court Theatre - Denham Street and Alma Street, Rockhampton, QLD - 1939 Interior - Ultimately to become the Southside Cinema

Built on the site of an earlier (1910) ‘open air’, 1,500-seat Earl’s Court Cinema. It was later roofed over. It was demolished and a new Earl’s Court Cinema was built in 1939 to the plans of architects Hockings & Palmer with Sydney based architect George Newton Kenworthy. Designed in an Art Deco style, the auditorium had 2,500, all on a single sloping floor. It was operated by Birch, Carrol & Coyle. The Earl’s Court Cinema was opened on 19th July 1939 with Lyn Bari in “Pardon Our Nerve” & Deanna Durbin in “Three Smart Girls Grow Up”. It was equipped with a Western Electire(WE) sound system.

In later years the cinema was twinned and re-named City Cinema Centre, it closed in 1972 as the Southside Cinema. It was taken over by a church and today is Southside Rockhampton Presbyterian Church, loosing some of its Art Deco design.
