The Wintergarden Theatre was built by the Birch, Caroll & Coyle chain, opening on 12th January 1925 with Douglas Fairbanks in “The Thief of Bagdad”. Designed by architect Henry Eli White, it also presented variety, plays and other events on its stage. In later years it also hosted jazz & rock concerts.

The Wintergarden Theatre was closed as a cinema in 1974. It was used for storage for the Leichhardt Hotel. By 1999 it was vacant and was demolished in 2013 to build and apartment block.
