The “new” Bijou Theatre seated 800 and launched on a 20-year lease in downtown Green Bay on September 9, 1907. The original Bijou Theatre, also by Bijou Amusement, had opened January 16, 1905 on S. Washington Street. But the crowds for that vaudeville house were too large and so it moved into this former building that housed the John Beth Grocery Store.
The Bijou Theatre began to mix films in with live vaudeville before switching entirely to motion pictures in 1919. The theatre closed on May 28, 1927 after the film, “Sinners in Heaven” starring Bebe Daniels & Richard Dix. The theatre didn’t convert to sound and the building was converted to a Leath Furniture retail store.
In 2018 The Childrens Museum of Green Bay now stands on an expanded site.
