Ray L. Jennings launched the Colonial Theatre in downtown Hondo. The theatre was housed in the former Christian Church which was given a major transformation from house of worship with steeple to a Spanish motif style theatre jettisoning the steeple. Its opening film was “Find Your Man” starring Rin-Tin-Tin on November 18, 1924. The theatre outclassed the aging Star Theatre which would close the following April.

On November 23, 1929, the Colonial Theatre installed a Syncrodisk Sound System re-launching with Hoot Gibson in “The Long, Long Trail”. Jennings installed an improved, disc-less sound system at the Colonial Theatre in September of 1936. Jennings would build the Raye Theatre in 1938 and closed the Colonial Theatre on June 25, 1938 with a showing of Smith Ballew in “Roll Along Cowboy”. The Rogers Furniture Company moved into the Colonial Theatre later that year.
