Orion w. Shannon built the Portland Drive-In Theatre just north of the city at the intersection of Wildcat Drive and Lang Drive. The first film was on July 16, 1954 with “Dangerous When Wet” starring Esther Williams. The screen was blown down by tornado winds that October reopening in January of 1955.
The last advertisement for the drive-in was January 22, 1967 with Xavier Samuel in “Spin Out.” A news article says that the drive-in was demolished in 1968 to make room for Kolb Chevrolet. In the 21st Century, one could find a CVS drug store on the property just across the street from a large H-E-B grocery store.
