Writing in the October 20, 2015 issue of the Cannon Courier, Robert D. Bush mentioned the Ritz Theatre in his essay about Woodbury in the 1930’s. “Dr. (J. F.) Adams also saw an opportunity for Woodbury to have its own local entertainment. He opened up the first theatre in Woodbury called the Ritz Theatre. It had a stage in the beginning where live shows could be performed. It was only later that the city of Woodbury allowed movie reels to be shown on Sunday afternoons.”
The February 2, 1955 issue of The Exhibitor reported that 32-year-old Charlie Jernigan had been charged with murdering his wife in the basement of the Ritz Theatre in Woodbury. (He said it was an accident.) The article said that Mr. Jernigan had purchased the Ritz Theatre “about six months ago”. The Ritz Theatre was still open in 1957.
