The Westcliff Shopping Center launched in July of 1949 theatre-less with its first units as E.B. Mott’s variety store, Worth Food Markets and Moreland’s Drug Store. The Westcliff Theatre was part of a $1 million addition or second unit announced a year later. Architect Joseph H. Gaylord designed the theatre with suburban families in mind. Lots of free parking and quiet, cry room for kids were just some of the features.
The theatre was a $250,000 project containing an optimistic count of 1,000 seats. TCU alum Bill Boron would be working close to his alma mater with the theatre just off of campus. The theatre launched February 27, 1951 with Brian Donlevy in “Impact". The theatre was a commercial flop failing to find its audience. The most steady crowds came in October of 1953 when Wescliff United Methodist held services in the building until its new theatre was ready in 1954. As for the film-side, the Westcliff’s final showing was September 30, 1954 with Danny Kaye in “Knock on Wood".
Give J.E. Foster & Son credit for knowing it had a loser on its hands. It had planned a third unit addition in 1954 and eyed the flagging theatre. The month after the last film had played at the Westcliff, Foster & Son razed the cinema which had stood for just three years in Fort Worth. The theatre was replaced by a new-build cafeteria. The Westcliff Shopping Center would go on to celebrate its 70th Anniversary in 2019.
