The New Theatre launched March 22, 1934 with “Footlight Parade” starring James Cagney and Joan Blondell. A contest selected the new name of the theatre as the Abbey and netted $5 for a resident. The Abbey Theatre sponsored a film made by National Motion Pictures of the town in 1935 that premiered at the Abbey Theatre.
The People’s Theatre Circuit of Alabama took on the venue in 1936. Bessie Loyless-Walker took on the theatre in 1941. The Abbey Theatre closed June 28, 1948 as Loyless built a new theatre, the Archie Theatre. The Archie Theatre was named after her son, Archie M. Walker and launched July 1, 1948. The Abbey Theatre was repurposed for other retail uses.
