Glover A. Johnson opened Centre’s first sound movie theatre on November 1, 1929. The brick and steel reinforced structure was a new-build venue.
One of the most popular screenings for the Cherokee Theatre was on June 2-4, 1940 when “Gone with the Wind” played at the Cherokee Theatre. Johnson would next build the Emory Theatre in 1947 named after his son, and the 411 Drive-In.
The Cherokee Theatre auditorium was converted to the ‘Miracle Mirror Screen’ in 1953 for showing widescreen, CinemaScope films. The auditorium was modernized bringing seat count to 435. The first Miracle Mirror screening was held at the venue on November 15, 1953 with “Thunder Bay” starring James Stewart.
The Cherokee Theatre fulfilled a 30-year leasing cycle with regular screenings ending at the end of 1959. Events and special screenings continued to 1961 in the theatre with various rummage sales held thereafter.
