This venue goes back to the World War I era as a caffe'-theatre and cinema of distinction, even mentioned in his stories by Ernest Hemingway. After World War II the now-legendary neorealist film by Rossellini, “Roma citta' aperta,” (Rome, Open City) opened here in its initial commercial run on September 27, 1945. Through the 1980’s new films of distinction played here, including the popular “Nuovo Cinema Paradiso.” After the 1990’s it was it was shuttered for a number of years before becoming a concert venue in 2015 and a popular disco beginning in 2017.

In 1983 I saw the film “Scusate il ritardo” here. In July 1989 here I saw “Nuovo Cinema Paradiso” (Cinema Paradiso) for the first time. In December 1990 I went to “Verso sera” with Marcello Mastroianni.
Another film I saw here was “A ciascuno il suo” or “We Still Kill the Old Way” by Elio Petri on August 27, 1971.
On June 10, 1950 Luchino Visconti’s film “La terra trema” opened here and at the Barberini, probably in a cut and re-dubbed version.
