Super 66 Drive-In

The Super 66 Drive-In opened before the 1954 season, when it declined to renew its contract with the local projectionist union. The drive-in was described as “one mile and a half south of Ford City on (PA state) Route 66”.

The 1962 International Motion Picture Almanac listed its capacity as 280 cars, its owner as Roxy Serrao.

The drive-in lasted until the end of the 1983 season, when Mr. and Mrs. Rox Serrao were described as the owners of the Super 66 Drive-In in Manor Township.

Only faint hints of the back ramps are visible today.

The location maps better with 889 PA-66, Ford City, PA. Using “main street”, despite it being in the description, does not map properly for whatever reason.

Plus, as the name of the drive-in indicates, that section of the road was called “route 66” or “PA-66” as it is known today.

The Kittanning Paper’s Historical Headlines column today included the following entry from Nov. 19, 1969:

Theater owner Rox Serrao of Ford City announced the scheduled reopening of the Roxy Theater, 9th Street, Ford City, and the continuing operation of his 66 Drive-in theater as long as weather permits. Serrao said the Roxy will offer “family pictures, special children’s pictures, and keeping up with the trend of changing entertainment, specially selected adult first-runs.” Days of operation will depend on patronage, the operator said.

A closer address is 885 Main St, Ford City, PA.

Google has updated their addresses and this puts it right where the screen used to be. So, despite Main St being PA-66, this address now works better.

Today, all you can see is the remnants of the ramps.
