Gruenspan

Located in the St. Pauli district to the northwest of the city centre. It was built as a dancehall in 1889. Later re-named Palmengarten. In 1909 it was re-named Hippodrome. From 1919 until 1921 it operated as the Freiheit Lichtspiele, screening silent films. It was operated by Fre-Me-Eilm Gmbh & Lohinoor Film Co. mbh. In 1921 it was operated by Louis Bodensieck. Later use by W. Meyers St. Pauli Saale. It then became a bathhouse.

It reopened as a cinema in 1952, re-named Ahoi Filmbuhne. It was operated by Oskar Rehr & Guther Kosse. It was equipped with Askania projectors. In 1956 CinemaScope was installed with a 1 channel sound system. In 1960 Zeiss Ikon Ernemann X projectors were installed and the sound system was changed to a Uniphon.

In 1963 it closed and became a discothque. In 1968 it re-opened as what became the famous Grunspan, later Gruenspan, a live club and music hall. The name was inspired by Herschel Grynszpan. Many top names artists have appeared here, including Bryan Adams, Linkin Park, Alice in the Chains, Primal Scream & R.E.M. In 1968 a 500 square feet pop-art wall painting (the largest in Europe) was unveiled. It was painted by Werner Nofer & Dieter Glasmacher. This is listed as is another pop art painted mural by Werner Nofer in the Abaton Kino in Hamburg.
