This theatre is not to be confused with another Teatro Manzoni currently in the city and functioning. This one originally opened in 1876 with a performance of the Verdi opera “I Lombardi alla Prima Crociata”. It was later a venue for Vaudeville-style variety shows, with names like Petrolini on the roster. Anna Magnani sang here. It became a cinema as well in 1932. The place went into decline. In 1960 the Rome newspaper “Il Messaggero” purchased the building and used it for printing its daily paper. The facility closed in 1962. Nothing of the original theatre now exists, though the exterior has changed very little.

The Teatro Manzoni was located on Via Urbana, in the Monti district of Rome, and a short walk to the Basilica of Saint Mary Major.
On May 18, 1940 the Cinema Manzoni was showing two Italian films: “Il ponte dei sospiri” and “Cose dall'altro mondo.” They are noted in a listing from Il Messaggero.
