The Star Theatre on Kingsway at Forest Street was opened in January 1914 presenting cine-variety. It was a low building of brick & concrete construction. In 1928 the stage was enlarged to 20ft deep and there were four dressing rooms. In 1930 it was equipped with a British Talking Pictures(BTH) sound system and the first ‘talkie screened was Tim McCoy in “The Overland Telegraph”. In 1932 it was taken over by Kirkby Pictures, Ltd. who operated the Regent Cinema 100 yards away on Kingsway. Pictures and Variety were still programmed and were continuous Monday to Friday, with two shows Saturday. Prices 6d. to 1s. The Star Theatre was equipped with a 'wide-screen’ in 1955. It was closed on 28th October 1958 with Jock Mahoney in “Showdown at Abilene” & Jeff Chandler in “The Tattered Dress”.
In March 1961 it was taken over by the Newcastle based Essoldo chain, who also took over the nearby Regent Cinema, but they did not re-open the Star Theatre. Instead, they used it for storage and it later became a garage.
