Hayfield is a small town in the High Peak, Derbyshire, near the larger town of New Mills.
After the town’s principal cinema, the Tivoli Cinema (see separate Cinema Treasures entry) had burnt down in 1932, films were not shown in the town until 1952, when the Webb family presented some shows in the town’s band room. These proved successful and, from 1955, a more permanent arrangement was entered into, whereby the room was rented from the band on three evenings a week. (Given that bandmaster Bernard Webb was husband to Doris Webb, who became the cinema manageress, and their son, also Bernard, who was employed as a projectionist in Manchester and Wilmslow, also looked after the projectors at Hayfield, the negotiations were probably not that difficult!)
The screen measured 8ft by 5ft and two new projectors were acquired to ensure excellent picture and sound. There were two houses, at 6.10pm and 8.20pm, on Monday, Friday and Saturday. Admission was one shilling (5p) for everyone.
Councillor George Dale performed the opening ceremony.
It is not known when the cinema closed. It is also not known whether the building has been demolished.
